Evolution and current state

Although the first transect at El Cortalet (in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park) was established in 1988, the Catalan BMS network as such began to operate in 1994, when 10 more transects were added. Since then, the number of transects has been increasing steadily. As of 2023, data has been collected from 240 itineraries, 180 of which were active in that year.

The following map shows the geographical distribution of the butterfly transects indicating those that were active during the past season as well as the number of years with available data for each. By clicking on the points on the map you can see an aerial photograph of the transect.
